Answer
Payday Super becomes mandatory from 1 July 2026. From that date, employers generally need to pay Super Guarantee for each payday and ensure contributions are received by the employee super fund within 7 business days after payday, unless an ATO exception applies.
In Lightning Payroll, the proper workflow for current super processing is Pays >> Payday Super for each completed pay run. The Super Fund Deposits screen remains available for deposit history, SuperStream mailbox responses, resends, SAFF follow-up, legacy catch-ups and exceptional manual adjustments, but it is no longer the recommended place to start ordinary super payments.
Before Your First Payday Super Run
- Complete employee super setup. Go to Employees >> Super >> Superannuation Fund and make sure each employee has the correct active fund.
- Check APRA fund details. Most employees need a valid USI, the correct member number, and one fund marked as the primary fund.
- Check SMSF details. Self-managed super funds need the correct ABN, BSB, account number and Electronic Service Address, unless a business-related SMSF exemption applies.
- Choose fund payment methods. Go to Settings >> Super Fund Providers and confirm whether each fund uses Direct Credit (ABA/XML), PayTo, PayID or another supported workflow.
- Review payment timing. Direct Credit and external clearing houses can take longer than NPP methods such as PayTo and PayID, so allow for bank cut-off times.
Process Super For A Pay Run
- Complete the pay run on the Pays screen.
- Click the Payday Super button on the Pays toolbar.
- Set the Payment Date.
- Select the completed pays to include in this super batch.
- Review any validation messages. Lightning Payroll will flag issues such as no payable super, an existing deposit, no primary fund, invalid USI, invalid ESA or missing fund details.
- Fix the issue or untick the affected pay, then click Create.
- Review the SuperStream Summary.
- Click Send Messages, unless you are intentionally using the SAFF export option for an external clearing house.
- Make the matching payment immediately using your selected method.
Payment Methods
- Direct Credit (ABA/XML): Lightning Payroll prepares the bank file or Direct Entry preview. You upload the file to your bank or pay each line manually.
- PayTo via Ozedi: A near real-time NPP option where Ozedi can debit the approved bank account automatically once the remittance is sent.
- PayID via Ozedi: A fast NPP option where you send the funds manually from your bank to the Ozedi PayID after submitting the remittance.
- SAFF export: Use this only when you want an external clearing house or SuperStream gateway to handle the messaging and payment workflow.
Where To View History
After a batch is created, you can search deposits and check SuperStream responses from the Super Fund Deposits screen in the SuperStream section. This screen is for viewing, editing and recovering existing deposits rather than starting the normal Payday Super process.
