Payday Super | Mandatory from 1 July 2026

Lightning Payroll leads the way on Payday Super

From 1 July 2026, eligible employees' super needs to be paid on payday and received by the employee's fund within 7 business days after payday, unless an ATO exemption applies such as for some new employees (ATO guidance: about payday super). Lightning Payroll already gives you the practical pieces to get ready now: SuperStream messaging, qualifying earnings support for STP in 2026/2027, guided validations, flexible payment methods, and scheduled processing inside your normal pay run workflow.

What to do now

  • Review each employee's USI, member number, and primary super fund selection.
  • In Employees >> Super >> Super Funds, fix incomplete records before July.
  • In Settings >> Super Fund Providers, assign the payment method for each fund.
  • Choose between bank file upload, manual transfer, Ozedi PayTo/PayID, or SAFF export to another provider.
  • Start early so setup, testing, and support can happen before EOFY gets busy.

Tip: validate a fund USI with our free USI validator, and remember SBCH closes on 1 July 2026.

What to do now

Get your setup clean before July

For most businesses, the main preparation work is cleaning up employee super records, deciding how payments will be made, and making sure your pay run process and cash flow are ready well before Payday Super starts.

Check each employee record

Make sure each employee has a valid USI, the correct member number, and a primary super fund selected in Employees >> Super >> Super Funds. If an employee has not provided a fund, you can request their stapled super fund through the ATO.

Choose your payment path

Assign the payment method for each provider under Settings >> Super Fund Providers. You can pay with ABA or ISO 20022 XML bank files, manual bank transfers from the direct entry report, Ozedi PayTo/PayID, or export SAFF CSV for another gateway.

Plan timing and cash flow

Payday Super works best when it becomes part of every pay run. Start the setup early, review how same-day or scheduled payments fit your cash flow, and avoid leaving configuration until EOFY support demand ramps up.

How it works today

Payday Super in Lightning Payroll

Once your setup is in place, processing Payday Super is quick and straightforward. Most of the heavy lifting is automated inside Lightning Payroll, so super becomes a simple final step in your normal pay run process.

Finish pays, then open Payday Super

Complete the pays in a pay run, then click the Payday Super button from the Pays screen to choose which completed pays you want to turn into super contributions. You can pay on payday, before payday, or schedule the payment date in advance.

Fix issues before you send

Lightning Payroll automatically detects many common errors, shows colour indicators to explain the issue, and prompts you to correct the details before lodgement. MVR support will be enabled from 1 July 2026 when the new ATO service goes live.

Send messages, then pay your way

On the final SuperStream Summary screen, click Send Messages and then complete payment using your chosen method. That can be a bank file upload, manual bank transfer, Ozedi PayTo/PayID, or SAFF export if you are using another clearing house or gateway.

Compliance confidence

Gold-standard SuperStream certified

Lightning Payroll is registered at the gold standard on the ATO's SuperStream Certified Product Register. We have been sending contribution messages through Ozedi since 2014, and the software is already aligned to the main Payday Super data and process changes.

  • Qualifying earnings support is already built in and will flow automatically through STP for pays in the 2026/2027 financial year.
  • Member registration is built in, so new employee fund accounts can be opened from Lightning Payroll.
  • Direct-to-fund SuperStream messaging via Ozedi removes the need for a clearing house if you do not want one.
  • ATO Fund Validation Service checks help keep fund banking and USI details current.
  • MVR support will be enabled from 1 July 2026, when the new service becomes available.

These checks reduce rejected contributions and give you a stronger base for meeting Payday Super timing, while future validation updates will extend coverage as new ATO services come online.

Payment methods and gateway choice

After you send SuperStream messages, Lightning Payroll lets you pay the batch in the way that best suits your business and banking setup. Included options cover file uploads, manual transfer fallback, faster Ozedi NPP methods, and SAFF export if you want to keep another provider.

  • Bulk bank file upload: ABA / Direct Entry or ISO 20022 XML for banks that support file import.
  • Manual bank transfer: use the direct entry preview/report and pay the amounts manually if file upload is not suitable.
  • Ozedi PayTo / PayID: near-instant NPP methods for stronger same-day payment confidence.
  • SAFF CSV export: keep using many third-party clearing houses or SuperStream gateways if that suits your workflow.
  • Payment method selection is set per provider in Settings >> Super Fund Providers.
